Liris Crosse: Crossing the bridge

in Events, Interviews, New England, News, Video, music videos by G. Valentino Ball on July 30th, 2010

Telling actress Liris Crosse (@LirisC) that she can’t do something might be a guarantee she will try.

“I’m not a person that takes no easily. Once you tell me ‘no’, that’s my driving force.”

After being told by agencies that she was too curvy to model, she struck out on her own booking gigs for herself. Soon a favorite in urban “lad mags” like King and Smooth, the Baltimore native’s curves earned her the nickname “Black Barbie”. Eventually rising to become a XXL Magazine Eye Candy Hall Of Famer, she also became a staple on the hip hop video sets of stars like Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Jennifer Lopez and 50 Cent.

(Thats Liris in the gold dress)

Now as an actress, she is beginning a new chapter. Instead of resting on her fame as a model she chose to start from the ground up. Instead of resting on her resume, she hit the pavement. Small roles on shows like “The Wire” and “Law and Order” were all part of the process of getting to the next level.

“I’m committed to acting. I humbled myself. I even did background work just so I could be on set. I wanted to absorb the atmosphere and be near the work.”

The human sponge approach is seemingly working. In Abidjan, a featured film at this year’s Roxbury Film Fest, she has a stellar turn as a mother who takes her young New York born son on his first trip to her African homeland with eye opening results. The trip ends up with both of them coming away with some valuable lessons. Playing a Mom may seem a stretch for a former video vixen but that’s exactly how she likes it.

“That was what drew me to the role. It wasn’t anything that people knew me as. I really wanted people to respect me as an actor.”

ALL CITY EVOLUTION hits today

in Events, Hip-Hop, New England by G. Valentino Ball on July 23rd, 2010

Some of Boston’s most well renown visual artists team up for a multimedia exhibit.

All City Evolution is an unparalleled acknowledgement of Boston’s history and aspirations for its future. It is a collection of works by individual artists sharing a common alliance: roots in graffiti culture and grounding in Boston’s neighborhoods. Comprised of canvases and photographs, the works interpret the legacy and development of graffiti art, the inspiration derived from it, and the vision each artist has for what’s to come. Chronicling a shared starting point in graffiti, the expansion into murals, graphic design, photography, community and youth work, is All City Evolution’s commentary on the various communities as represented by the artists. Mediums include – photography, aerosol, oil and acrylic paintings and range from Intricate detail to raw expressionism. The central themes of their experiences are presented as a social commentary, a documentation of Boston’s art movements and a celebration of hip-hop culture.

10,000 Strong comes together to heal Boston’s hood

in Events, New England, News by G. Valentino Ball on June 18th, 2010

Over the past few months we have seen escalating violence in Boston. This Sunday the community comes together to fight back and save lives.

It is time to stand up, take responsibility and be accountable. Who Cares? We do. We doin’ good in the hood. Are you tired of the drugs, guns, violence, crime, broken families, lack of guidance and direction. Are you in need of service? Will you serve? Do you need support? Will you support? Together we are 10,000 strong. If one can make a difference, what will 10,000 strong do? Think of it as a mini Million Man March for Boston.

DJ PREMIER SPEAKS ON GURU’S PASSING

in Events, Hip-Hop, Interviews, New England by G. Valentino Ball on April 22nd, 2010

This is the official statement from Preemo. Definitely a class act. One more reason to respect him.

IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.

FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.

I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.

I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. I’M GONNA MISS HEARING HIS SIGNATURE MONOTONE VOICE WHEN HE WALKS IN THE ROOM, BUT THE SONGS WILL ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO ME….HIS RHYME FLOWS WERE INSANE, AND I WILL NEVER REMOVE HIM FROM MY HEART AND SOUL…….REST IN PEACE TO THE MAN WHO FELT “SATISFACTION FROM THE STREET CROWD REACTION” … I LOVE YOU GOO…….DJ PREMIER

in Events, Live, New England by G. Valentino Ball on April 8th, 2010

B.o.B at the House Of Blues 4.07.10

With the ongoing decline in music sales the importance of live performance has grown exponentially. In other words, if you aren’t rocking stages then you’re broke. And in some cases the raised expectations for performance has caught some Hip Hop acts off guard. more
