Benefit Show for XL (Ft. Slaine, 7L & Esoteric, Edo G, Big Shug, and more)

in Events, New England by NewDude on January 27th, 2010

Esoteric blogged about this great show earlier…

My man XL has been diagnosed with a rare blood disease. This show next Thursday (Feb 4th) will help XL and his family, as all the proceeds will go directly to them. It is very fitting that the event is at the Western Front, for XL has been holding it down as long as any emcee in Boston and the Western Front has played a pivotal role in Boston’s hip-hop scene. Despite being a dope emcee, XL is hands down one of the best guys in the Boston music industry, so come out Feb. 4th and show some love! 7L, myself, Jaysaun, Slaine, Edo G, Big Shug, Bugsy and a lot of Boston hip-hoppers well be rocking. Check XL’s video below for “Codes” below, shit is bangin!

Everybody Hates Greg: Party and Soundtrack

in Events, Mixtapes, New England, New Music, R&B, Thats Major Project by G. Valentino Ball on January 26th, 2010

http://i47.tinypic.com/k0giuv.png

So I’m having a little party for my birthday. Thanks to the good people at the Tavern, R.O.B., So Good Entertainment, Stephen Anglin and Justin Springer for opening their doors. Live performances from Amandi Music (@Amandimusic), City Slickers (@CitySlickerCru) and Dre Robinson (@DreRob) backed by a band. Then the PD of Hot 97 Boston, the Heavy Hitter DJ Chubby Chub, takes over to kill the turn tables. That combined with a bunch of my rapping friends and nothing but fun can be had.

Of course since we are about music, I wanted to give yall a little. The good people at Pollymore music along with Thats Major put together a compilation of the performing artists. Favorite joints from Dre Robinson, Amandi and City Slickers. Download and enjoy!

The Revival : Women in Hip-Hop [Trailer]

in Events, Live by NewDude on December 29th, 2009

“Im trying to be one of the best period, not just one of the best with breasts and a period”

This looks dope! We need more films like this in hip-hop.

The Revival (Europe, 2009, 17 min).
Directed by Invincible.
Produced by EMERGENCE Media and Iqaa the Olivetone.

The Revival gives a candid glimpse into the first meeting of legendary Hip-Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante and veteran Philly emcee Bahamadia, as they trade stories of their struggles and triumphs in the industry over their long careers. It shows the exchange of lessons between them and up-and-coming artists DJ Shortee, Eternia, Stacy Epps, and Invincible. This short documentary, a collage of performances and behind the scenes footage, was filmed by Invincible while on the road in Europe as part of We-B Girlz all women independent Hip-Hop tour. The largest all female Hip-Hop tour of its kind, it spanned over three weeks, six countries, and featured dozens of female artists who performed for tens of thousands of supporters.

Produced by EMERGENCE Media: EMERGENCEmusic.net

Co-presented by TheFembassy.com which features follow-up interviews with the artists from the film.

Shout Outs to: Manuu the Transporter, Shania D, Chela Simone, Mauikai, EJ, Stef the Chef, That Fucking Sarah, Karin and Submerge, Yarah Bravo, everyone who rocked the UNITY stage, the organizers of We B Girlz, and everyone who performed or presented at the We B Girlz festival.

A special thanks to all the promoters who brought us out, and all the supporters who attended the shows, bought merch, and showed love!!!

DJ Green Lantern Presents Emilio Rojas – The Natural (Mixtape)

in Events, Mixtapes by G. Valentino Ball on November 19th, 2009

beyond

When my homie and ill event creator Marlene (@RestlessMiss) asked me to talk trash in between acts at her upcoming Beyond The Beat show I quickly accepted. Why? Cuz her music taste is on point so I knew I wouldn’t have to sit through a bunch of suicide inducing sets. Plus she has been raving about the headliner Emilio Rojas for a minute and I was looking forward to seeing him in this unique setting. Beyond The Beat is a melding of Hip Hop with a live band and has a real improv feel to it as well. This is going to be a hot one.

Emilio just dropped his latest mixtape with the Evil Genius and this dude got some heat. In honor of the event I will be dropping joints from everyone on the show’s line up on Thats Major. Stay tuned. Covers and link after the jump.

An Exclusive Look at The New Harvard Class on The Wire [Video]

in Events, Interviews, ThatsMajorTV by NewDude on November 2nd, 2009

thewire
As the New York Post reported, shortly there will be a sociology class revolving around HBO’s hit television show The Wire.

‘THE Wire,” HBO’s gritty series about life in the Baltimore ghetto, is about to become a course at Harvard.

The announcement came at a panel discussion at the school featuring several of the show’s stars, according to the Harvard student newspaper, The Crimson.

The class will be taught by sociology professor William J. Wilson, one of the best-known African American history professors in the country, who has made no secret of the fact that he is a huge fan of the show.

“I do not hesitate to say that it has done more to enhance our understanding of the challenges of urban life and the problems of urban inequality, more than any other media event or scholarly publication,” Wilson told the audience before poking fun at himself, “including studies by social scientists.”

Sonja Sohn, who played Det. Kima Gregs, Andre Royo (Bubbles) and Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar Little) were on the panel talking about the show’s unusual impact.

The series ran for five seasons, starting in 2002. Each year, it took on a different aspect of urban life — from drugs to schools to the news media.

Harvard will be not the first college course on “The Wire.” Other students commented on The Crimson’s site that courses on the TV show already exist at Duke University and Middlebury College.

ThatsMajor editor G.Valentino Ball was at the first panel regarding the introduction of this course into Harvard’s overall offering of curriculum to the incoming student body, and has provided an exclusive glimpse into the panel discussion that transpired.

RELEASE THERAPY – DJ DOO WOP

in Events by G. Valentino Ball on October 15th, 2009

If you don’t know who DJ Doo Wop is then you should just hit the X in the corner. Around here we respect greatness. And Doo Wop is just that; great. His tapes had two main hallmarks. He pushed the pitch up on all his records which automatically gave his mixes that extra energy. But what makes Doo Wop that dude is his intros. The Bouncemaster and his crew the Bounce Squad, came with the murder business with his freestyles. In fact his freestyles were better than some of the records on his tapes. Anyway he is touching down in the Bean thanks to the good people at Laced. Laced is one of the top lifestyle shops in Boston and I have a feeling this is just round one in their takeover. BIG TINGS a gwan in the Bean. Come through and buy me a drink or 3.
